The Magpies suffered a fifth defeat in a row in all competitions as Eberechi Eze’s early long-range strike proved crucial.

Howe’s team selection proved controversial, with Hall omitted from the starting line-up in front of England boss Thomas Tuchel, who is firming up his plans ahead of this summer’s World Cup finals.

Hall was taken off at half-time during the previous weekend’s home defeat to Bournemouth, with Howe clearly unhappy with the left-back’s performance levels.

However, the Magpies boss insists his thinking ahead of the Arsenal game was more about what Dan Burn could offer in the left-back slot rather than a criticism of Hall’s recent displays.

“It is always a difficult decision because Lewis is an outstanding player,” said Howe. “And you never for any second doubt his qualities and what he can bring the team.

“I felt, for a number of reasons, that Dan Burn was the right pick because of his height and physicality, with Arsenal’s threats. Dan has never let us down in that position. He plays it very differently to Lewis, but I thought it was the right call for this game.”

Howe was also forced to defend his recent use of Nick Woltemade in the wake of Saturday’s game, with Newcastle’s club-record signing once again restricted to a 15-minute cameo from the substitutes’ bench, in which time he set up an excellent chance for fellow replacement Yoane Wissa.

“I thought Nick did really well,” said Howe. “Yoane and Nick both performed well when they came on. I thought both of our subs delivered a performance. Nick’s creativity for Yoane’s chance, that’s what he can do. He’s a very special talent in that respect.

“If Nick plays like he did today, he’ll get loads more minutes and opportunities to impress. I was very pleased with him.

“Our number nines have been scoring, so unfortunately, he has had to wait for his opportunity. But as I say, if he plays like he did today, I was very, very pleased with him.”
