Southampton are starting to see wider interest build around Welington Santos, with multiple Brazilian clubs now circling a player who has struggled for consistent minutes this season.

The left-back has featured 17 times in the Championship during the 2025/26 campaign, but his role has fluctuated. That situation often creates opportunities in the market, and clubs in Brazil are now moving beyond initial monitoring into a more crowded race.

As we recently covered, Palmeiras had been the first to seriously assess Welington as a market opportunity. However, the situation is no longer isolated.

Growing competition in Brazil

Welington Santos is now attracting attention from Internacional and Flamengo as well, says Bolavip. That turns what was a single-club watch into a broader domestic battle for his signature.

That growing interest is driven by similar conditions across those clubs. All are looking for reinforcement at left-back, and Welington’s situation in England makes him a viable target.

Internacional’s interest also has a specific trigger. Their current left-back, Alexander Bernabei – formerly of Celtic – has struggled for consistency this season. As a result, the club have stepped up their search for alternatives in the position, bringing Welington into their thinking.

His current lack of prominence at Southampton, combined with a valuation of around €3m (£2.6m), places him within reach financially.

Even so, the key detail remains unchanged. Despite multiple clubs tracking him, there has still been no formal contact with the player’s camp. The situation remains at the stage of analysis rather than negotiation.

What happens next for Southampton

From Southampton’s perspective, the situation is evolving. Interest is clearly growing, and that often changes the dynamic quickly. Still, without any club taking the next step, there is no immediate pressure to act.

At the same time, Welington Santos remains a player with a balanced statistical profile. That gives Southampton a decision to make. They can either look to increase his role or consider a move if concrete offers arrive.

For now, the story is defined by interest spreading rather than progressing. The next move will depend on whether one of the Brazilian clubs decides to turn monitoring into action.
