Nottingham Forest look set to lose a key member of backroom staff amid what is sure to be a crucial summer at the City Ground.

The Reds’ hopes of securing Premier League survival were boosted at the weekend when they came from behind to topple Burnley 4-1. Morgan Gibbs-White’s 15-minute hat-trick after the break helped move Vitor Pereira’s men five points clear of the drop zone.

With five games remaining, the job is certainly not done yet. But regardless of whether or not Forest stay up, the end of the campaign will mark the start of a big close season.

According to The Telegraph, compensation has been agreed between the Reds and the Scottish Football Association over Craig Mulholland. Forest’s head of football development is in line to leave the club at the end of the season to take up the role of chief football officer at the SFA.

Mulholland has been with the Reds for the past three years, since 2023. His role at the Nigel Doughty Academy involves overseeing loans, emerging talent development and recruitment, first-team player transition, player pathways, the B team and men’s academy.

Mulholland has worked for the SFA previously. Earlier in his career, he held the roles of assistant football development officer, football development officer and senior youth development officer at the national body.

He went on to join Scottish giants Rangers in 2003 and stayed for two decades before taking up post at Forest. At Ibrox, he held various positions, including academy operations manager and academy director.

The Reds will go into this summer with lessons to learn from how this term has panned out. Having finished seventh in the Premier League and qualified for Europe in 2024/25, this season was supposed to be about building on that platform.

Instead, it has been a chaotic campaign which has seen four different head coaches in charge and been dogged by a relegation battle. Vitor Pereira has steadied the ship since his appointment and the Forest boss could yet mastermind a special finish to the season, with a Europa League semi-final on the horizon.

Whatever happens in the coming weeks, there will be incomings and outgoings among the playing squad in the summer. Global head of football Edu is also likely to depart, with the former Arsenal chief’s appointment Trentside having not exactly worked out.
