Denzel Dumfries

Denzel Dumfries can become one of the protagonists of the summer transfer window, with Manchester United and Aston Villa pushing for his signature.

In January, it was Liverpool who pursued a deal for the Netherlands international. Sport Witness covered their approach, as Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta confirmed the initial conversations that the Reds held for a move.

A transfer didn’t materialised, as the Nerazzurri couldn’t rope in Ivan Perisic as an extra wing-back option.

Over the past few weeks, Dumfries has only managed to elevate his status in Italy. After recovering from a major injury, he has become a regular under Cristian Chivu, scoring a brace against Como last weekend.

This has only led to Dumfries receiving more attention in the Italian press. His contract at Inter runs out in 2028, leading to Manchester United and Aston Villa keeping an eye on his situation.

Inter attempting renewal

L’Interista praise the Netherlands international after the special performances he has put in since March. They believe that replacing him is very difficult for Inter, who are now trying everything to renew his deal beyond 2028.

They’re certain that without a new deal, the Premier League could become a destination for the wing-back.

Manchester United and Aston Villa are ‘most interested’ in his signature, aware of the €25m release clause in his current contract.

This has also put Inter on alert, who have offered Dumfries a salary increase to €5m per season. This is an attempt to beat competition from England and convince the player to stay at the San Siro.

So far, there has been no response from the ex-PSV player, but Inter could keep pushing.

Our take: English clubs likely being used

It feels like adding Premier League sides into the picture for Dumfries is not a new tactic by any means. This has happened in the past when it was Aston Villa again who were mentioned as a suitor. At that point, Dumfries ended up signing a new contract at Inter.

He seems to be enjoying life in Milan. Chivu’s side are on their way to winning another Serie A title, needing four points before the end of the campaign.

Dumfries, as a result, has no reason to leave. Manchester United and Aston Villa don’t need a right back right now, which suggests this is the player’s entourage trying to force Inter to pay more.
