Chris Sutton disagreed with David Moyes’ clear belief that Everton should have been awarded a penalty in the opening stages of Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
The Toffees saw their appeals for a spot-kick tured down after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall went down in the box under the attention of Curtis Jones.
Dewsbury-Hall and Moyes clearly felt as though the challenge constituted a foul, but their appeals were waved away and there was no recommendation from the VAR for the decision to be reviewed on the pitchside monitor.
“He (Dewsbury-Hall) runs off the back of Szoboszlai,” Sutton said. “The run is well timed and the ball is excellent. My initial reaction was shoulder-to-shoulder and I am not sure he is getting on the end of that anyway.

“Jones gets back well. There has to be more contact than that. David Moyes disagrees! It is too easy though for Dewsbury-Hall to get in.”
Everton’s frustrations continued in the first half, as Iliman Ndiaye thought he had opened the scoring, only for the goal to be ruled out for an offside in the buildup.
Just a few minutes later, Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, as he tucked the ball past Jordan Pickford after being picked out by Cody Gakpo.
