Liverpool’s last-gasp winner will sting their Merseyside rivals even more because it was not just a derby decided at the death, it was also a goal that sent the Reds into the Premier League record books.
Virgil van Dijk was the man who got it done in stoppage time as Liverpool snatched a huge three points from Everton. A winner in this fixture is always special, but this one carried extra weight because of the piece of history that came with it.

Liverpool have now scored six 90th-minute winners against Everton in the Premier League, which is the most one side has managed against a single opponent in the competition’s history.
It also felt significant because Liverpool have so often been the side on the receiving end of late punishment this season. To finally be the team celebrating a dramatic finish was satisfying enough, but doing it against Everton and making history in the process made it even sweeter.

These are the games that live long in the memory, and a stoppage-time winner from the captain is about as brutal as it gets from Everton’s point of view.
Van Dijk stepped up and showed his experience, as did another Liverpool veteran.
Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk showed their class for Liverpool
Mo Salah and Van Dijk have been Liverpool’s standard-bearers for years, and this felt like another reminder of that. In a season that has fallen below expectations, it was two of the club’s biggest modern legends who made the difference again.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Van Dijk said: “Today it was massive. In the situation we are in, in the hunt for the Champions League spots, that’s definitely not the Liverpool team that I’ve been in, but that’s the reality. It’s important we got the win.
“Every game is a big one, like I said, we are very disappointed as a whole for the season we’re having, it’s below standards. But we have to keep going, keep fighting. On to the next, today was a good three points.”

That sums it up neatly. Liverpool know this season has not been good enough, but a derby win like this can be a catalyst for improvement, and making Premier League history against Everton only makes it feel even better.
