The city council is looking to carry out the scheme in residential roads around Foundry Lane Primary School in Freemantle.
Proposals include a zebra crossing in Foundry Lane to the north of its junction with English Road, raised road surface tables at the junction of English Road and Imperial Avenue and the junction of English Road, Foundry Lane and Heysham Road, and speed bumps in Foundry Lane.
The project could also see pavement widening and new parking restrictions around the zebra crossing and at junctions to improve visibility.
A public consultation on the safer routes to school scheme is open until Thursday, April 23.
Freemantle ward Labour councillor Pam Kenny said: “Road safety is a major concern for residents in Freemantle and therefore one of our top priorities for action as ward councillors.
“We therefore welcome the proposed changes in the residential streets near Foundry Lane School as they reflect the views of local people and the local school.
“I’d like to pay special thanks to those local residents who have been actively involved as volunteers in the Foundry Lane schools streets programme which has been instrumental in helping to secure capital investment for local road safety improvement.”
The project is funded from Active Travel England’s combined active travel fund, which can only be used on schemes designed to improve the walking, cycling and wheeling environment.
The formal traffic regulation order consultation marks a key milestone for the project more than two years after the council first invited residents and the school community to share their experiences in a travel perception survey.
Further engagement took place late last year before the current design for the scheme was put together.
