Those hoping that Newcastle United appoint Jose Mourinho as Eddie Howe’s replacement could be left wanting after recent claims from the Portuguese media.

With Howe under pressure, Mourinho has been linked with the managerial job at Newcastle United

Despite never actually coaching Newcastle, Mourinho has often talked about his special connection with the club, built up through his days working alongside the legendary Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona, Sporting and Porto.

This would be the WORST Eddie Howe replacement we could get! 😡

Or are you still captured by his old magic?

The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ is a divisive figure. Some may be attracted to his box office nature and his history of winning trophies.

For others – including this observer for whatever that is worth – Mourinho is a declining force.

Still, it seems he could be leaving Benfica for a major club after all.

Mourinho could re-join Real Madrid

According to Portuguese outlet Record, the idea that Mourinho could move back to Real Madrid 13 years after leaving is a genuine possibility.

Madrid president Florentino Perez is understood to be considering bringing him back after a disappointing result for Alvaro Arbeloa in the Champions League against Bayern Munich.

Do you still have faith in PIF at Newcastle?! 🤔

While few would ever have imagined Mourinho ever getting the chance to manage at the top table again, Perez has done something like this before.

Indeed, he brought Carlo Ancelotti back to the Spanish capital back in 2021 when his career appeared to be on a relative downturn.

The same thing could happen with Mourinho, who only re-joined Benfica back in September.

Mourinho turned down the chance to coach Newcastle in the early 2000s and has been tipped as a managerial target on an infrequent basis across the PIF era.

It has always been difficult to imagine. His reputation in England has never truly recovered from how things ended for him at Manchester United almost ten years ago now.

Still, such is the pull of the man, it would be fascinating to see what happens if he did return to Real Madrid of all teams.
