Aston Villa reached the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday with a 4-0 win over Bologna and Unai Emery’s side look well set for a top-five finish in the Premier League as they prepare to entertain Sunderland on Sunday.

The Black Cats are set for a mid-table finish following last season’s promotion and they head to Villa Park having won their last two league away games against arch-rivals Newcastle and Leeds.

Aston Villa vs Sunderland preview

There were joyous scenes on Thursday as Aston Villa booked their semi-final spot in the Europa League by cruising past Bologna. But their recent Premier League matches have been a lot tighter and there is a strong chance that their home clash with Sunderland will revert to type.

Unai Emery’s side looked like outside title contenders a few months ago but while they were unable to last the pace with Manchester City and Arsenal, a top-five spot looks likely and a last-four clash against Nottingham Forest gives them a great chance of reaching the Europa League final.

However, they have not been free-scoring in the league. They have netted more than once in just two of their last 12 games so we may not witness a goal-filled clash at Villa Park.

They eased past Bologna, winning 4-0 after a 3-1 first-leg success in Italy, while striker Ollie Watkins has bagged five goals in his last seven appearances and Morgan Rogers continue to grow into the season as he stakes his claim for an England starting spot at the World Cup.

Villa have scored more than twice in just two of their last 13 home league games, though, so don’t expect them to run riot in this clash.

Opponents Sunderland, meanwhile, have defied expectations by comfortably avoiding relegation trouble following their victory in last season’s Championship playoffs, but there has been a noticeable change in the last couple of months.

Early on, it was their results at the Stadium of Light that were keeping them away from the scrap, but they have shown up well in recent away games by completing a double against arch-rivals Newcastle at St James’ Park and also winning at Leeds.

However, Regis Le Bris’s side have scored just ten goals in 16 road matches this season, and only Wolves and Forest went into this weekend having found the net fewer times in the top flight.

Aston Villa vs Sunderland Bet BuilderMorgan Rogers to have have over 2.5 shots

Rogers found the net against Bologna on Thursday and has had at least three shots in seven of his last 11 Premier League appearances.

Under five Sunderland corners

No Premier League team average fewer away corners than the Black Cats’ 3.38 per game and they look unlikely to eclipse that figure at Villa Park.

Noah Sadiki to be booked

The Sunderland midfielder has had a yellow card in five of his seven away appearances since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations.
