Newcastle United were beaten 2-1 at home to AFC Bournemouth on another day of regret at St James’ Park.

The Magpies managed just one shot on target in the first half and fell behind in the 32nd minute after a 10-pass move that resulted in Rayan crossing for Marcus Tavernier to sweep home and put the visitors in control.

This was a day in which Bruno Guimaraes was passed fit to take a place on the bench and he made his return with 28 minutes left. It was his first appearance since he tore his hamstring in February away to Tottenham in a 2-1 win.

Newcastle levelled the game up when Evanilson played the ball to the feet of William Osula before he ran on and scored his second goal in as many game. There was a lengthy review after Bruno was adjudged to have played a pass forward but after a second scan by VAR, it was given.

Newcastle tried in vain to grab an equaliser but Bournemouth will argue they were full value for their away win.

Howe United fared against the Cherries:

Aaron Ramsdale 6

Left flapping at two close range goals. Hardly the biggest problem today.

Tino Livramento 6

Not close to the levels we know he is capable of. Moved from right-back to left-back before coming off with an injury.

Malick Thiaw 5

Watched on as Bournemouth scored one in each half.

Sven Botman 5

Struggled for long periods. Played on a knife-edge after picking up a yellow card.

Lewis Hall 6

Did not look bad going forward but struggled to deal with Rayan. The lack of a shield in front of him from Barnes complicated matters. Was replaced at the break after 35 touches with Trippier coming on at right-back and Livramento switched to left-back.

Sandro Tonali 7

Gave it everything he had and put in a decent shift as skipper. Criticised by some for not doing enough for the goal but at least he was in the right position.

Jacob Ramsey 4

Struggled to stamp any authority on the game. Bournemouth dominated in midfield during his time on the field.

Lewis Miley 6

Tried to make a difference but too often opened his arms in astonishment at the lack of options.

Harvey Barnes 3

Too often second best in battle with Alex Jimenez. Lacked aggression and did not manage a shot on target.

Anthony Elanga 3

Did not threaten much and failed to manage an accurate cross before going off on 62 minutes. Had 34 touches in total.

William Oslua 7

Did his job with another goal to his tally. If only Newcastle had got him on the ball more often. The fact he was assisted by a Bournemouth error says a lot.
