Freddie Potts touched on a wide range of topics in conversation with West Ham United’s in-house media channels ahead of Monday night’s trip to Crystal Palace.
From his inspirations both inside and outside of the London Stadium, his favourite achievements, his toughest opponents, and his most impressive teammates.
The 2025/26 campaign has been a year of firsts for Freddie Potts. A first West Ham United league appearance, a first Premier League start.

He would have scored a first Hammers goal as well, only for Tomas Soucek to incur the wrath of VAR during November’s 3-1 win over Newcastle.
Potts was outstanding against Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes that November afternoon; labelling the former one of his toughest opponents alongside Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.
Freddie Potts reflects on his breakout season at West Ham United
Speaking to the club’s official website, the Barking-born midfielder reflects fondly on what was an ‘unbelievable’, coming-of-age occasion in claret and blue.
“My first start in the Premier League against Newcastle earlier this season, and then getting Man of the Match as well was unbelievable,” Potts said when asked to describe his favourite ‘personal achievement’.

“Starting in the Premier League for the first time against Newcastle was a massive achievement for me. That was special, as was being part of the winning UEFA Europa Conference League squad.
“Being a part of that squad and being on the bench in the final [a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in Prague] was a great experience as a fan and as a player.”
Potts also highlights his first professional goal [coming during a loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers in 2023], his first-team bow against Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Europa League, and also a triumphant futsal tournament with the Under-11s.

Gerard Prenderville played a big role in Potts’ rise
Potts, moreover, cannot speak highly enough of Gerard Prenderville. Alongside his father, West Ham legend Steve, Prenderville was promoted to Nuno Espirito Santo’s staff in the autumn having previously worked in the academy.
“There are so many coaches here at West Ham who’ve helped me out so much, but I’ll say Gerard Prenderville [stands out],” Potts adds. “He’s someone that’s been with me for a lot of my time in the Academy, and now he’s with the first-team, which is sort of similar to myself.”
Speaking of Steve, Freddie Potts’ dad thinks a ‘tough challenge’ awaits the young midfielder. Now that he has forced his way into the senior squad, the difficult thing is to kick on and really cement a place in the team.
After a fine start, Potts has started only three of West Ham’s last 13 Premier League games. He was replaced at half-time in two of those.
