Highfield House Hotel in Portswood has been at the centre of demonstrations since last summer.

Southampton Test MP Satvir Kaur told the Local Democracy Reporting Service she was continuing to press for its use to come to an end as soon as possible.

The site in Highfield Lane has been used by the Home Office since 2020.

Earlier this week the Labour government confirmed 11 hotels had been closed with more set to close in the coming weeks.

These 11 sites did not include Highfield House Hotel.

Latest government data for the end of December 2025 said there were 105 asylum seekers in the ‘contingency’ hotel accommodation in Southampton, with a further 213 people in longer-term ‘dispersal’ accommodation across the city.

Labour MP Ms Kaur said she supported the government’s plan to end the use of all hotels for asylum accommodation by 2029, which she said was introduced under the previous Conservative government.

She said the use of hotels was “clearly unsustainable”.

Ms Kaur said: “It not only costs more to the taxpayer, it also isn’t the right solution for either asylum seekers themselves or the local communities hosting them.

“I welcome the news that the government has already ended the use of 11 hotels this week as part of efforts to get a grip on the system.

“I am also encouraged by the progress in speeding up asylum decision-making, with processing up by 56 per cent, which essentially is reducing the reliance on temporary accommodation like hotels, and local charities tell me those affected are feeling the benefits of this already.

The former city council leader added: “In Southampton, I remain in regular contact with the Home Office and relevant ministers regarding Highfield House Hotel.

“I continue to press for its use as asylum accommodation to come to an end as soon as possible, and will keep pushing for a better solution that works for both local residents and those currently being housed there.”
