Arsenal take on Sporting in the Champions League with Mikel Arteta’s side looking to book their place in the semi-finals

Arsenal are looking to make it through to successive Champions League semi-finals

Arsenal face Portuguese side Sporting CP in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night as they look to book their place in the final four.

Mikel Arteta’s side take a 1-0 lead into the fixture, following Kai Havertz’ late winner in the first leg last week. The German star gave his side the advantage with his injury-time finish in Lisbon, after a tense affair had seen goalkeeper David Raya play a key role in keeping the game level with a string of vital saves.

The Gunners have suffered a slump in form in recent weeks, losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City and crashing out of the FA Cup at the hands of Southampton before a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday put a dent in their Premier League title hopes.

However, they are 90 minutes away from making it through to successive Champions League semi-finals and are set to face Atletico Madrid in the last four after the Spanish side beat Barcelona on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

Declan Rice was absent from Arsenal training on Tuesday and is a doubt for tonight’s Champions League clash, but Arteta insists the midfielder is doing everything he can to make himself available.

Martin Odegaard and Ricardo Calafiori were also absent from training, while Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber are set to be assessed prior to the game.

Mikel Merino also remains an absentee for the Gunners with a foot injury, with his likely return date still unknown.

Having missed the first leg through suspension, Moten Hjulmand is eligible to make his return for Sporting in the second leg, with Luis Suarez’s availability also confirmed following confusion over whether he would be suspended for tonight’s fixture.

Barring the injured Fotis Ionnidis and Luis Guilherme, the Portuguese side are without any other absentees and manager Rui Borges can call on a full-strength side.

Who are the Champions League semi-finalists?

Victory tonight would see Arsenal make it through to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in successive seasons, with Atletico Madrid awaiting them in the last four.

On the other side of the competition, reigning champions PSG have booked their place in the semis with a 4-0 aggregate win over Liverpool, and they will face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, with the German side currently leading 2-1 following the first leg.
