Police found the 25-year-old woman with a serious head injury on Peartree Road at 8pm on Monday, and she was taken to the hospital for treatment, where she remains.
Now, Mandeep Singh, 31, appeared at Southampton Magistrates Court today, charged with attempted murder.
Singh, of Sheffield Road, Portsmouth, has also been charged with assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting or abandoning a child to cause unnecessary suffering.
A Punjabi interpreter translated the proceedings for Singh, who only spoke to confirm his identity.
District Judge Anthony Callaway remanded Singh in custody and will next appear at Southampton Crown Court on May 15.
