Alan Shearer claimed that Alexander Isak was “hardly involved at all” during Liverpool’s Champions League match with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening, as he was substituted off at half-time.
The Swedish striker started for the Reds for the first time since fracturing his leg against Tottenham Hotspur in December, with a 2-0 deficit to overcome at Anfield.
But after an uninspiring first-half performance, Arne Slot made the decision to swap him out for Cody Gakpo, as the clash remained goalless with work required to make the semi-finals.
It’s a move that hardly surprised Shearer, who was working on commentary duty for Amazon Prime Video for the fixture.
He said: “He wasn’t hardly involved at all was he, Isak? Only five touches in that half, didn’t really do enough, didn’t look fit.
“And I think Arne Slot said before the game didn’t he? That he didn’t see him doing too many more minutes than 45 and that’s exactly what happened.”
It’s been a sub-par first season for Isak on Merseyside, having parted ways with Newcastle United on terrible terms after a long and drawn-out transfer saga.

Following a ‘will he, won’t he’ summer, the 26-year-old secured a deadline day move to the tune of £125million, but has failed to live up to that price tag by any stretch of the imagination.
Despite racking up a staggering 62 goals and 11 assists in black and white across 109 appearances spanning three years, Isak has managed just two goals and one assist at Anfield since his switch.
The Swede has also seen his season hampered significantly due to the leg fracture he sustained late in 2025, finally making his grand return to competitive football in last week’s first-leg clash with PSG.
Liverpool were ultimately humbled in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, with Ousmane Dembele putting PSG 2-0 up on the night and 4-0 up on aggregate with a remarkable brace.
It’s a competition that Newcastle United were unfortunately omitted from in the round of 16 8-3 on aggregate by Barcelona.

As a result, the Magpies have since turned their undivided attention to the Premier League, with just six matches remaining for Eddie Howe to climb the table.
Newcastle United currently sit 14th in the standings with 42 points to show for their efforts. However, their race to once more compete in Europe isn’t done just yet.
Just five points separate them from a seventh-place Brentford, while they sit six from Chelsea in sixth and 10 from Liverpool in fifth.
However, they will need to be perfect in their upcoming clashes with Bournemouth, Arsenal, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham should they hope to contend in the big leagues next season.
