The future of Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke remains uncertain, with his contract set to expire in June 2027.

The 25-year-old Dutch international has been a key figure for the Seagulls, starting 30 matches this season while contributing three goals and two assists. Brighton are keen to retain him, but his long-term plans are unclear.

Van Hecke has earned a reputation for his ball-playing ability, ranking among the top 2% of centre-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for progressive passes, averaging 7.03 per 90 last season.

He also featured in both of the Netherlands’ March friendlies – a 2-1 win over Norway and a 1-1 draw with Ecuador and is expected to play an important role for his country in upcoming international fixtures.

Head coach Fabian Hürzeler provided an update on Van Hecke’s situation last week. “I love Jan Paul,” Hürzeler said. “I love his attitude, how he works for the team, I love his mentality of winning.

“He has a big impact on his teammates; therefore I would love to continue working with him, because we have a really good relationship.

“I also like some perspective from the players regarding their future,” Hürzeler added. “We will sit together, try to make a decision that is best for the club, that is best for the player. Jan Paul knows what he has with Brighton.

“He’s always had the opportunity to play, to grow, to make the next step. “We hope to make the next step together, to be successful with him. This will be our main challenge and then we see how it’s going.”

According to talkSPORT, Brighton are braced for a summer battle to keep Jan Paul van Hecke, with the Dutchman attracting admiring glances from the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool. Newcastle have also tracked the Netherlands international in previous windows.

Brighton signed Van Hecke from NAC Breda for just £2m six years ago, and his value has risen significantly. With his contract running until 2027, the Seagulls would be expected to demand at least £50m if they decide to sell.

Liverpool have also been linked with Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, who is aiming to secure a move before the season ends. The Argentine’s contract expires this summer.
