Fans of mental transfer speculation, hold onto your hats. The summer window is still a couple of months away from opening and yet we may already have a contender for wildest rumour of 2026 with reports that Brighton are looking to sign Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Yes, that Manuel Neuer. Widely considered the greatest goalkeeper of the 21st century, if not all time. A World Cup winner, two-time Champions League winner and bloke with over 10 Bundesliga titles to his name.

The guy who just went to the Bernabeu at the age of 40 and made nine saves in a man-of-the-match performance as Bayern Munich won 2-1 against Real Madrid, leading Peter Schmeichel to call it one of the best displays of goalkeeping he had ever seen.

And for whom there is now a clamour to get him out of international retirement to return between the posts for Germany at this summer’s World Cup. That Manuel Neuer.

What is behind the Neuer from Bayern to Brighton rumours?

As with all good transfer rumours, Manuel Neuer swapping Bayern Munich for Brighton has a couple of separate factors which somebody has thrown together to build a case for it happening.

Two plus two equals 26. Or if you prefer an example from Brighton transfer speculation of days past, Michael Owen joining the Albion on a free because he has horses in training at the same stable as Tony Bloom.

Neuer is out of contract at Bayern this summer

Factor one is Neuer being out of contract with Bayern in the summer. Talks over a new deal were suspended at the request of Neuer last month as he wanted to see how he recovered from a recent muscle injury.

Brighton have been linked with a summer move for Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer

That performance against Real suggests pretty bloody well. Yet Bayern could still opt to move on from Neuer this summer and seek to sign a new long-term number one. Like, erm, Bart Verbruggen.

If Bayern and Neuer do part ways, retirement would have seemed the obvious option pre-Bernabeu. But with Neuer now having shown himself and the world he can still deliver at the highest level, might he be tempted to carry on his career away from the Allianz Arena?

Verbruggen a long-term Bayern Munich target

Factor two is that Bayern have viewed Bart Verbruggen as a potential Neuer successor for at least two seasons now. Verbruggen swapping Brighton for Bavaria is the rumour which refuses to go away.

The Dutchman has been excellent this season and still aged only 23, is years away from his peak. If Bayern sign him this summer to replace Neuer, he could be their number one for the next 10 seasons. For context, Neuer was 25 when making his controversial move from Schalke to Bayern in 2011.

If Brighton do sell Verbruggen this summer, the theory fuelling a move for Neuer is the Albion will need a new goalkeeper to replace him. Who better than Neuer, effectively meaning the Seagulls swapping number ones with Bayern?

What this theory does not take into account though is Carl Rushworth. Based on his appearances for Coventry City this season, the Albion already have a replacement for Verbruggen on their books.

As magnificent as Neuer is, would Brighton really break their wage structure to sign a 40-year-old with no resale value to block the development of Rushworth who could be worth many millions in a couple of years time?

Hardly the Albion way, is it…

Hurzeler personally pushing for Brighton to sign Manuel Neuer

Factor three is Fabian Hurzeler personally pushing for Brighton to sign Manuel Neuer. Which seems very unlikely given how little say managers tend to have over recruitment at the Albion.

Roberto De Zerbi wanted greater control and we all know how that ended. Hurzeler would have been under no illusions when appointed as Albion head coach that his job is to coach the players, not pick and buy them.

Too much credence has also been placed on Hurzeler being German and having played for Bayern Munich from Under 10s up to the B Team.

Hurzeler made 36 appearances for Bayern Munich II between 2011 and 2013 whilst Neuer was number one for the first team.

Rather than proving there is some sort of close existing relationship between the two, it serves to underline how young Hurzeler is (just in case you had not already heard).

Neuer was already established as one of the best in the world whilst Hurzeler was trying to break through into the reserves at the same club. A seven-year age gap for those keeping count.

Question marks over the future of Hurzeler

There remain question marks over the future of Hurzeler. He is out of contract in 2027 and there has been no public talk of any negotiations taking place over a new deal.

Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be considering a summer move for Hurzeler. Their path to taking Hurzeler back to Germany could be helped by a rumoured £13 million release clause in his Albion contract.

Not that many people seem to think Hurzeler would leave Brighton for Leverkusen. Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith spoke to BestBettingSites.co.uk about the rumours and was happy to dismiss them.

“I think the Premier League is the place to be at the moment, isn’t it? Most players and managers feel that,” said Smith.

“Hurzeler has got himself into the league. He is on a really good run at the moment, really good. So, I think he would think long and hard about leaving.”

“I suppose the question is how far can he take Brighton? They have been in European spots before. Leverkusen won the Bundesliga a couple of years ago, so he might think he has a better chance of challenging for trophies there.”

“But I would be surprised. I would have thought he is happy at Brighton as long as he can add to the squad in the transfer windows. I would be surprised if he left.”

But back to Neuer. Would the Albion really go after a player at the request of a manager who could be gone within the next 12 months?

Either through being poached by Leverkusen, not having his contract renewed or by being sacked in the summer depending on where Brighton end up finishing.

Could Brighton sign Manuel Neuer this summer?

Will Brighton try and sign Manuel Neuer this summer then? Well, that rather depends on if you think the Albion will smash their wage structure for a 40-year-old goalkeeper.

Risk devaluing Rushworth and derailing the long-term plan carefully put in place for him to become Brighton number one. And make a signing asked for by a head coach whose own long-term future is up-in-the-air.

All of that before we even take into account whether Neuer would want to uproot in his 40s and move to Brighton.

He could sign a new contract with Bayern. Or he could retire. What better way to go out than with another Bundesliga title, another DFB Pokal and perhaps even another Champions League?

One Bayern fan posting on a forum summed up the Manuel Neuer to Brighton rumours with typical German directness. Absoluter Blödsinn. Translated perfectly as absolute nonsense.

But otherwise… get your pennies saved for that £70 replica 2026-27 Albion goalkeeper shirt with Neuer 1 printed on the back.
