Derby County have paid tribute to club legend, Henry Newton who has died at the age of 82.

Newton played for the club for 16 seasons, during which he helped them to win the 1974-1975 first division title.

He was Brian Clough’s last signing as Derby manager.

Newton started his footballing career at Nottingham Forest in 1963 and played 282 league matches for them before leaving in 1970.

Former teammate Roy McFarland paid tribute to Newton, hailing his industrious playing style and integral role in the squad.

“He was tenacious, his tackling was second to none,” McFarland said.

“He dealt with things on the field; if anything went wrong, you just knew that Henry Newton would do something in the match to support us as a team – he was an excellent footballer.

“Henry added that little bit of class, that little bit of extra to the group, which made us a lot, lot stronger as a team.”

Newton played for the England under-23 side on four occasions, making his debut on 25 November 1964 against Romania.

He also played for Everton where he made 85 senior appearances before leaving in 1973 and later for Walsall.
