Philogene, making his first start since suffering a knee injury back in mid-January, took the ball off George Hirst and coolly converted from the spot in the 11th minute to set the Blues on their way to a first victory at Carrow Road in more than 20 years.
Asked if Philogene had been down as the designated penalty taker, McKenna explained: “We didn’t name one today, actually.
“Jack’s (Clarke) been the penalty taker and is nominated when he starts, but we felt like today, with Jaden, George and Anis (Mehmeti) we had three players who have all been penalty takers for their clubs before.
“So we decided to let the players decide by feelings in the moment. What stage of the game it was, who’s playing well – all them things can sometimes be a factor.
“When Jack didn’t start, we decided to leave that to them. And I think you can say they sorted it out well.”
He added: “If someone has not started a match for four months, you really consider putting him into one like this. But Jaden’s someone who I think enjoys the big occasion, enjoys the spotlight. When he was stepping up for that, you don’t know that it’s going to go in, but you’re pretty sure it’s going to be a composed penalty.”
