They created the better chances in the first half and were generally the side who were easier on the eye but they also had some tough moments at the back.

Here is how they performed as individuals.

Bart Verbruggen 8/10

Key saves with his feet and then diving to his right low down. Dealt with the high balls and poor conditions well and was reprieved by a flag when he could only parry from Ward-Prowse.

Mats Wieffer 8/10

Superb movement, to which we are accustomed, and two unusually good finishes to win the game. His best match offensively came on a day when he was troubled by Anthony at the back.

Jan Paul van Hecke 7/10

Solid at the back and calm on the ball. Booked for a lunge as he moved quickly to cover for Wieffer.

Olivier Boscagli 7/10

Did exactly what was expected with a dependable showing on his return in place of Dunk and showed his simple but precise passing ahead of the opening goal.

Ferdi Kadioglu 8/10

Another busy performance. Albion were a big threat down their left and Kadioglu combined well with Minteh and later Mitoma.

Yasin Ayari 7/10

Recalled to midfield but in a deeper position than usual for most of the match. A solid, hard-working outing.

Pascal Gross 8/10

With other older heads not involved, he played a senior role and was astute in his use of the ball, even when some fans were demanding he go forward quicker. Delivered a fine cut-back for the opener.

Diego Gomez 6/10

More about endeavour and hard work in a shape than attacking moments and he dragged a shot well wide. But was a valuable part of the team effort.

Jack Hinshelwood 6/10

Another grafting display and got into some good attacking positions, setting up a good chance for Minteh in the process and failing to take one himself.

Yankuba Minteh 8/10

Was often the biggest threat for Albion, as was often the case earlier in the season, but it was noticeable how he seems to have his head up looking for the pass more than was previously the case.

Danny Welbeck 6/10

Might have done better with an early chance and been quicker to get on to a superb Minteh cross but, again, was decent in the team play.

SUBS – Georginio Rutter, Carlos Baleba, Kaoru Mitoma, Joel Veltman all N/A

All four went on from the 75th minute and underlined the strength Albion have on the bench by protecting and then adding to the lead.
