Armed police descended on Leicester city centre to make an arrest in connection with a double stabbing.

Officers swarmed Leicester’s Carlton Street at around 8pm on Thursday (April 9) after spotting a car that police said was believed to be linked to a double stabbing in London earlier in the week.

Footage seen by LeicestershireLive showed firearms officers and a police dog surrounding a vehicle on Carlton Street, with officers heard shouting: “Arms on your head now.”

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said the vehicle was stopped shortly after being identified by officers.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody, with the investigation handed over to the Metropolitan Police.

The Met confirmed the arrest followed a stabbing on Erith High Street, in Bexley, south-east London, on Monday (April 6).

Two victims, a teenager and a man in his 20s, were found at the scene when officers arrived at around 9.40pm and taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening or life-changing.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “The arrest was made in connection with a stabbing on Erith High Street on Monday, 6 April. The investigation continues.”
