The works, led by National Highways, have involved extensive resurfacing between Eastleigh and Hedge End, as well as drainage improvements and upgrades to safety barriers, resulting in months of narrow lanes and congestion along one of the region’s busiest routes.

But the road will now reopen to four lanes in each direction from April 21.

Leader of Hampshire County Council, Nick Adams-King, welcomed the news, adding: “Good news at last on the M27 – after what feels like a very long stretch of cones and lane closures.”

He added the reopening would be “a welcome relief for everyone” and said many drivers would enjoy “seeing four lanes open again.”

However, the council leader added that a temporary 50mph speed limit will remain while final testing is completed.

Lane restrictions will be lifted by 6am on 21 April, but overnight slip road closures will continue.
