Newcastle United’s mixed season so far has led to speculation around the future of manager Eddie Howe at St James’ Park beyond the summer.

The Magpies sit 12th in the Premier League table and will go trophyless once again after a crushing 8-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League Last 16, where they were embarrassed 7-2 at the Camp Nou in the second leg of the tie.

Question marks were raised about Howe’s long-term future on Tyneside after comments made by David Hopkinson, where he refused to back the manager publicly, and that

Newcastle Can Make Howe U-Turn

Eddie Howe

Reports this week have suggested that Howe has been given assurances that he is safe as manager of Newcastle for now, with the intention to give him the freedom to rebuild the squad this summer.

But there is a fair argument to say that the 48-year-old has taken the club as far as he can, and a change would make sense for all parties. Does Howe deserve the chance to rebuild? Absolutely. But life, and football, isn’t always fair, and sometimes it can be timing that is your biggest enemy.

In this instance, that may be the case. The World Cup this summer will see a number of top managers become available and move around, especially with top jobs likes Man Utd and Real Madrid expected to be vacant, while the likes of Man City, Liverpool and more could also see change.

That could give Newcastle a chance to make a move for someone who may seem unattainable at this precise moment, who could be exactly what the club and squad needs to move up to the next level.

Newcastle Can Make Pochettino Move

One such example is the current USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has already admitted that he is more than open to a return to the Premier League for his next job.

The Argentine’s contract with the USA is due to expire after this summer’s World Cup, and he will be available to pick his next club. Reports had suggested that he was likely to return to Tottenham, but they have since brought in Roberto De Zerbi on a long-term contract.

That leaves the door ajar for Newcastle to potentially make a move for the ‘world-class’ boss, with the hope that he can repeat his achievements from Spurs with the Magpies.

His style of play, experience in the league, and the fact he has done it before with Tottenham suggest that he could take this team to a new level, something Howe hasn’t shown he can, and it may be a case of now or never for the board to make their decision.
