A homeowner discovered smoke seeping from under their blackened bedroom door on returning to their Kent Street home around 6pm on April 2.
Noticing the danger, they left the flat and called 999.
Teams from St Mary’s, Hightown, Redbridge, and Eastleigh fire stations responded, using two sets of breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet, and ventilation fans to manage the situation and clear out smoke.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service reported that the homeowner’s choice to shut the bedroom door before leaving helped contain the fire damage to just the bedroom, sparing the rest of the property.
The fire crews returned to their stations following a stop message at 7.15pm.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “The occupant’s wise decision to close the door before leaving their home meant the damage from the fire was limited to the bedroom, with the remainder of the property untouched.”
