Manchester City fans have launched an independent trust aiming to ‘work with the club and other stakeholders to achieve better outcomes for supporters’. The Citizens Trust (TCT) will initially be led by an interim board of nine matchgoing Blues who aim to work with the club and other organisations to protect and support the interests of their fellow fans.

City fans have been in the unprecedented position for the best part of a decade of defending their club against unproven allegations that have been tried behind closed doors. The Blues had a Champions League ban overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2020, but have had their achievements under Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, and Pep Guardiola questioned as a result of Premier League charges that remain unresolved three years after being announced.

There has also been criticism of the club from their own supporters though, with organised protests last season about ticket prices – that helped lead to a freeze in season ticket prices and reduction in matchday tickets for this year – and more recent concerns about the North Stand and new requirements for having a season ticket.

In a statement, TCT has promised to “include campaigning on issues that impact the supporter experience such as ticket prices, unnecessary restrictions on how season cards can be used, accessibility, fixture scheduling, terms and conditions and more. It also means taking steps to improve the lives of their members outside of football through events, health and wellbeing schemes, partnering with third parties who can offer advice, and reaching out into our local communities.”

An interim board has been set up to launch the trust, with those nine Blues then intending to stand down ahead of elections where all members can stand for positions. Nick Clarke, interim chair of the new trust, said: “The lack of a supporters’ trust at City has long been a missing link in the chain between the club and its fans.

“Now, our fans have an opportunity to build a strong, collective voice to reinforce that link. Supporters across the country feel increasingly disconnected from the modern game, often feeling powerless to decisions impacting both their clubs and traditions they’ve built over generations – Blues are no different. This is our chance to begin reversing that trend at City in a really positive way.”
