Newcastle United star Joe Willock is convinced that the Magpies can still make a strong finish to the Premier League season.
With seven games to go the 2025/26 campaign is in serious danger of fizzling out completely after two cup exits in a month and a slide down to 12th place in the table. A defeat to Sunderland and some omnious quotes from CEO David Hopkinson on Eddie Howe’s future have left many wondering what comes next at St James’ Park.
For the players, they will be desperate to get back to work on Sunday at Crystal Palace and start closing the gap on the European places with 21 points still to play for.
Willock told Chronicle Live: “We still believe in ourselves. And we believe we can put a consistent run together and continue winning games in the Premier League away from home and at home.
“So we have to show that we can keep going and show where we can go in the remainder of the season.”
Willock’s injury woes are now behind him after a couple of tough years but he made 41 appearances last term and is on course to better that this season after 35 games so far. Willock has one goal and two assists to his name this season but will be keen to bolster that tally in the last few games.
Former Arsenal star Willock said: “I am happy and enjoying my football. I just want to help the team, and hopefully I can carry on pushing on. I am injury-free now. I am fit – fitter than I have ever been. Hopefully, I can continue showing everyone what I can do and on a regular basis.”
Despite injuries for key stars like Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, their absence has allowed both Willock and Jacob Ramsey to step things up in the engine room and form an understanding. And while there have been bumps in the road for the team in general, Willock feels that Ramsey can finish the season strong and their partnership goes from strength to strength.
Willock said: “Jacob Ramsey is one of my closest friends. I think everyone can see how much love I have for him.
“I am just happy he is doing so well. He’s come here and had an injury in the first game he played so I am happy he is fit and he can now put that behind him. He has played really well and hopefully there’s more to come.”
