Donervon Daniels’ opening goal against Colchester United had been cancelled out by Kyreece Lisbie early in the second half.

Latics needed the win to boost their play-off push, and Taylor helped them on their way to it after coming off the bench as manager Micky Mellon looked to inject a spark into their attacking play.

Taylor’s perfectly placed header got Oldham back in front in the 87th minute, before Kane Drummond rubber stamped the win in stoppage time.

“My first pro goal, first goal for Latics, it’s a special feeling and one I’ll always remember. I loved it,” said Taylor, who is on loan from Aston Villa.

“I knew coming on it was going to be that fine margin, just something small to get us going, and luckily it landed to me.

“Both of the men went with Garns (Joe Garner) at a back post, I saw the front post was open, so I took the space. And I don’t really score many headers, so I was shocked myself, but it was unreal.

“It was just instinct. I was in the right position at the right time.”

Asked what the result meant to him and the team, Taylor added: “It was massive. We’ve just got to keep this trend of wins going to get to that play-off spot – and to get that goal to help the team, it was massive.

“We had to fight. It wasn’t our best performance, we all know that, but we dug in and luckily we got the win and it shows our effort.

“It was so back and forth, all it takes is that one chance and we’ve got to be the clinical team to get it over the line and we did that.

“We’ve just got to keep it going. There’s stuff to improve on from the last game. As long as we keep working hard, dig out some wins. They’re not all going to be perfect wins and we’ve shown that we can dig in there.”

And that is an attitude has adopted individually in his first spell away from Villa.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, I’ve had many setbacks with injuries and it’s my first loan,” he explained.

“I’ve had to wait, it’s not been easy but I’ve taken my chance and hopefully it’s something I can build on now and keep it going.

“It’s a massive confidence boost. My first goal means so much.”
