Both Fabian Schar and Aaron Ramsdale want to stay at Newcastle United – but that might not be enough.

After the worst season of the PIF era to date, significant changes are expected at Newcastle United over the coming months.

I know it sounds like sour grapes, but I’d take the money and run 😡

Indeed, there has been talk of a rebuild on Tyneside – with Kieran Trippier’s imminent exit already confirmed at Newcastle.

It’s time to get ruthless. This squad has been allowed to grow old together and fans have been frustrated that the same names keep being picked.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest on Schar and Ramsdale.

Schar and Ramsdale want to stay at Newcastle

According to The Chronicle, both players are keen to extend their stays at St James’ Park.

Schar is out of contract at the end of the season, while Ramsdale is only on loan from Southampton.

Still, decisions are yet to be made on either front. At this stage, it would seem unlikely that Ramsdale will be signed on a permanent basis from Southampton, given he has not really convinced since his arrival.

Assuming Tino goes too – who on earth should we sign at right-back?! 🤔

It will be interesting to see what happens with Schar. The Swiss has been excellent at times this season but is clearly coming towards the end of his career at the very top level, given he is 34.

A decision will surely rest on whether Newcastle qualify for Europe during what remains of the season. If they do, they will surely need a bigger squad, and Schar could benefit.

Eddie Howe has been accused of being too loyal to Newcastle players this season, and that has not worked out in recent months.

There is some logic to keeping Schar, though only as a back-up if they are in Europe, which would place an added demand on the squad.

The case with Ramsdale is different. Aside from a few performances here and there, he’s not really ever proven to be good enough.

There needs to be a changing of the guard. Schar is one of the best defenders in modern Newcastle United history but everything comes to an end at some point.

If there’s no European football on the cards, perhaps it is time to say goodbye.
