The East Cliff Lift has been out of operation since the 2016 landslip which damaged the lifts track bed which resulted in the removal of the lift cars.
As part of the proposed works the remaining buildings and tracks will be demolished, some section of the lift mechanisms will be salvaged to be potentially reused in the future if the lift is reinstated.
Currently there is no plans to reinstate the lift as there is no funding available.
Two temporary construction compounds will be set up, one at the top of the cliff on East Overcliff Drive and one on the promenade below, to store materials and house machinery.
Planning documents indicate that an application for a lane closure along East Overcliff Drive. Documents also say that public parking spaces may be temporarily lost or relocated throughout the stabilisation works.
The works are due to start from September 2026 and be completed by March 2028 at the latest. it has previously been reported that the works would take eight months to complete.
East Cliff and Springbourne Ward Councillor Sara Armstrong said: “I wholeheartedly support works to stabilise the cliffs. This work will protect vital access to enjoy our beautiful beach and is important for tourism.
“Unfortunately, the lift isn’t planned to be reinstated – I used this lift as a child to access the beach and I know how missed it is by residents in my community especially elderly or mobility impaired. In it’s day, the funicular railway was quite the thing. It is heart breaking that this has been neglected for so long.
“Disruption shouldn’t be major, but there will be temporary compounds set up so I will keep watch – please let me and the other local councillors know if you have any concerns.
“We need confirmation from the council on the exact dates – as this application is planned to finish a year after originally expected. I’ll keep residents updated as work progresses and as we learn more.”
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council has submitted a planning application to get permission for the works. The proposal will be in public consultation until April 15 under planning application number P/26/00933/FUL.
