Emeka Adiele is yet to make his Eredivisie debut since leaving West Ham United and his starring Premier League 2 role during the winter window.

But, make no mistake, the youngster has no regrets about his decision to swap East London for FC Utrecht.

Adiele jumped at the chance to move to the Netherlands on a permanent basis, despite having established himself as one of the most exciting talents in West Ham United’s Under-21 squad. An England youth international, Emeka Adiele provided five goals and ten assists in 20 games during the first half of 2025/26, and might have been in FA Cup contention had he stayed put.

Speaking to RTV Utrecht this week, though, the teenager doubles down on his decision, feeling that first-team football will come around a lot quicker at Utrecht than it would have under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Ex-West Ham United kid Emeka Adiele is making progress at Utrecht

Adiele was talking after making an unofficial first-team debut during a friendly clash with Dordrecht during the international break.

“It was a good experience, the first match with this team. I am happy that I got some playing time,” says Adiele. “I want to secure a place in the first team as soon as possible.

“I need to get more minutes with [the reserves] to eventually make my debut in the first-team.”

Adiele has made four second-tier appearances for Utrecht’s Youth side, while making Ron Jans’ matchday squad for seven Eredivisie matches.

When delving further into his departure from the Hammers, Adiele points out that – while highly-regarded – he had not been given the chance to train alongside Jarrod Bowen, Crysencio Summerville and co at Rush Green.

Surprising, perhaps, considering that El Hadji Malick Diouf missed a month of action during the Africa Cup of Nations. Thus, opening up a chance for Ollie Scarles.

Adiele might have stayed had he been given a chance by Nuno Espirito Santo

The likes of Mohamadou Kante and Ezra Mayers are considered first-team players at West Ham these days. Adiele had not reached that point, though. And while they say patience is a virtue, the swashbuckling left-back was not going to ignore the chance to fast-track his development.

Wembley awaits the winner!

What is your favourite FA Cup moment of 2026 so far? 🏆

Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United celebrates after scoring the opening goal of the match during the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round match between West Ham United and Brentford on March 9, 2026 in London, England.

“Everything is different, especially at the highest level,” he adds. “At West Ham, I hadn’t played in the first team yet either. So that takes some getting used to. I will have to learn everything quickly,” he says, speaking after Utrecht reportedly beat Borussia Dortmund and Juventus to Adiele’s signature.

“There was also interest from other clubs. But I was happy with the offer from FC Utrecht. When I heard that, I thought, ‘That’s where I want to go’.

“[Head coach Ron Jans and I] get along well. We have already had several conversations. He is very nice. He made sure I felt at ease quickly. I appreciate that. He is a kind of mentor and a coach.”

Adiele is expected to be the long-term replacement for Utrecht assist king Souffian El Karouani.

El Karouani talked up a potential switch to West Ham in the winter – ironically enough – but now looks set for the Middle East.
