The 1982 Lotus Esprit Turbo, unearthed from a barn in the West Country, was sold by Charterhouse at its classic car sale on March 26 at the Haynes Motor Museum.
Richard Bromell of Charterhouse said: “I have seen and sold many projects of the years, but this is perhaps one of the more unusual as it was not only covered in lichen but also a thick covering of moss.”

Bought in 1990, the car’s owner began a restoration which was never completed, and the car was left in a Dutch barn in 1995.
It remained there for 30 years until it was recovered for the auction.
Despite being estimated at £10,000, the car drew significant interest and eventually sold for double the estimate.
The auction featured 60 vehicles and generated a total of £425,000.
Charterhouse is now inviting entries for its next classic car auction, scheduled for June 4.
A collection of vintage Lagondas has already been consigned for the upcoming sale.
