Jadon Sancho is set to become a free agent this summer, when his contract with Manchester United runs out.
Having joined Aston Villa on loan on deadline day in September, the winger has only recently begun to show flashes of his quality.
But with just one goal to his name so far this campaign, Sancho may need to deliver in the final two months of Villa’s season to prove he can remain a top-level player.
Borussia Dortmund have already been tipped to offer him a permanent contract, while Villa boss Unai Emery has also flirted with the idea earlier this year.
“He will need another contract, and maybe it could be here,” Emery said. “If he plays his best football, we will want him. But other teams could also be interested in him.
“This is football, and each match is important for every player’s and the club’s future, and for how we can achieve our objectives.”
On the latest episode of Claret & Blue Social, the panel were asked whether they would sign Jadon Sancho on a free transfer this summer.
Matt Lynch
“The head says no, the heart says yes. I think Emery can work wonders with him. I think it’s easy to forget that he is still only 26 years of age.
“The discourse around Jadon Sancho – I have never seen heat around a player, even more than Rashford. It’s incredible the amount of heat his name gets from fans outside of Aston Villa.
“It’s not Villa fans which cause that heat, but I’ve never seen that sort of thing before, or outside fans saying he can’t play at any sort of high level.
“I think Emery will get the better of him. I can’t believe the hate that he gets overall, but when it comes to the figure, the head says more no, as the signing-on fee might be crazy.
“You’ve had the conversation on a previous episode about Sancho or Harry Wilson, and from a financial perspective you’d hedge your bets on Wilson. He is also a more versatile player and has had a very good season as well.
“If you’re Unai and you have those two options, you’d go for Wilson over Sancho. It has been a joy to watch him take on players, but when you drill into the numbers, we haven’t seen the best of Sancho.
“Probably a part of that is down to Emery not trusting him to play a game for a while. A long way around it, but I’d say no, we don’t sign him.”
Max Stokes
“Probably not, but I’d love to know where his head is at and what he is thinking. What he tells Emery is one thing, but deep down, where does he want to be? As we’ve said, he’s still young.
“Over the next five years, at his peak, where does he see himself? The short answer is probably not. I’d love Harry Wilson, and I know he isn’t this either, but I’d love pace in the team.
“I was a big fan of Diaby, and he was the only player to play all of the games in 2023/24. Sometimes I’m sad enough to watch videos on YouTube of all of Villa’s goals that season. He was involved in everything.
“He wasn’t brilliant in every game that season, but his pace, trickery and quick thinking – I’d really love a player like that again. Sancho isn’t that. He isn’t quick and is a bit safe, potentially. I think there are better options out there.”
Sam Leonard
“I was starting on the side of we should do this, but now? I think the number one thing is that he is on a wedge, and we can’t afford that. The first thing we’d have to do is probably halve his wages.
“Abraham is the only player who I’ve heard about in years who has taken a significant pay cut to force a move. If I was advising Jadon Sancho, I would advise him to stay at Villa.
“He has a good manager and this is a good environment for him. Some players think they should be playing for Real Madrid or something, but there’s still time for him to do that.
“If you can stay at Villa, rebuild your career and rediscover yourself – because he has already tried Manchester United and it hasn’t worked – but if he stays at Villa, then my advice would be to stay.
“With the resources we have got, he would take up a large chunk of those resources. But we need his numbers up – it’s what Emery has been saying to McGinn, isn’t it?
“I was hoping that those numbers would appear in January, not around March or April. The goal he set up for McGinn in the Europa League, I thought, ‘yes, he’s here’.
“If he turns around and says that he loves Villa and that he’s happy to take a big pay cut, then at that point I’d take him. But he probably won’t, and he’d keep his huge wage in Saudi. It would be a shame because there is something there.”
Dan Rolinson
“The fact that we are all on the same side of this tells you all that you need to know. I think if it was as simple as the finances work, then you’d roll the dice on a three or four year contract for a player at 26. Relatively low risk.
“Big wages, a big signing-on fee, a big agent’s fee, and all of a sudden it becomes a very expensive package for a player who hasn’t really done it over the course of a season.
“Newcastle away, Fenerbahce away, a few other performances – it’s just not enough for a huge financial package. I think that there is probably better out there, but it will need smarter people than us to find them.”
