Alan Shearer has had his say on Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle United after David Hopkinson’s recent comments
Eddie Howe has come under pressure for a poor season so far with Newcastle United
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer doesn’t feel that Eddie Howe will be reading too much into David Hopkinson’s recent comments about the head coach. “I don’t have a stance on his future,” the Magpies CEO said when asked about Howe’s future.
“What I can tell you is that the derby loss hurt. We take it seriously. There’s nothing within us that thinks ‘well, it’s just three points and on we go’. It has resonated.
“I spent a couple of hours in a one-on-one lunch recently with Eddie, and we talked through a multitude of things, including that. Eddie’s our manager. I expect to have a great run to the end of the season here, and we’ll talk about the future when it’s time. Right now, we’re focused on this season’s competition.”
The comments have sparked further debate about Howe’s future after the disappointing defeat to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby, having crashed out of the Champions League and Carabao Cup in a matter of weeks.

Some supporters feel Howe’s time at the club is coming to an end, while others are still fully behind the head coach who ended their long wait for silverware.
Shearer agrees with the latter and feels the Magpies’ head coach is the ‘most successful manager in Newcastle’s history.’

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: “I don’t know whether Howe would read Hopkinson’s quotes, to be honest. I don’t think it would bother him, I think he’s been in the game long enough, even though he’s not that old, he’s vastly experienced.
“He understands how the game works. For me, Eddie Howe is the most successful manager in Newcastle’s history. He saved Newcastle from a disaster.
“So, if there’s one manager that deserves the chance, or the opportunity to go again in the summer, it’s him. The position that Newcastle are in at this moment in time, through no fault of their own, because of PSR or SCR, whatever, it’s been a really tough, difficult season for Newcastle.
“There are many factors for it, and I guess there has to be an inquest into how, why, and what. But I think if there’s one manager that deserves the chance to go again and try and rebuild to get back where they have been in recent seasons, then I think it’s Eddie Howe.
“He deserves that because of what he’s done for Newcastle, and what he’s achieved. I’d be more than happy to say he has to be able to go again.”
