With Manchester United flying in the Premier League, fans can hardly be blamed for wanting to stay in the moment.

However, as the summer transfer window edges closer, attention will naturally begin to shift toward what lies ahead. Last summer brought a major reshaping of the front line, as Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arrived in transfers worth just over £180million combined.

The season before, focus centred on defensive reinforcements, with Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui joining for a total of roughly £130m. This summer though, the emphasis seems to be on strengthening the midfield, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton among the players under close observation.

With Casemiro leaving and the futures of Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount and – for now – Kobbie Mainoo still uncertain, bolstering the middle of the pitch appears to be a key objective. That said, signings in other positions cannot be ruled out either. With that in mind, here are the latest Manchester United headlines.

Anderson transfer update

Manchester United’s attempt to sign Elliot Anderson may already have hit an obstacle, with England legend Chris Waddle suggesting that the midfielder might prefer a return to Newcastle instead of a move to Old Trafford.

Anderson joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle in 2024 in a £35m transfer at a time when the Magpies were under pressure to balance the books and meet PSR requirements. That deal ended a 14-year association with his boyhood club, which began when he joined as a schoolboy.

According to Waddle, though, the appeal of heading back to Tyneside could be a deciding factor if the chance presents itself. “Elliot Anderson is a Newcastle fan. He’s a Geordie… he won’t be in a rush but the chance of going back to Newcastle? I’m sure he’s always wanted to play in those black and white stripes and I’m sure he’ll be up for it,” Waddle, himself a Geordie former Newcastle star, said.

“But I think, again, there’ll be a lot of competition. There’ll be a lot of teams eyeing him up so you’d have a lot to pick from if he does decide to leave Forest. Newcastle may just swing it because he’s a Newcastle fan.”

Forest, meanwhile, are likely to demand a fee above £100m in an attempt to deter potential suitors. However, given the 23-year-old’s emergence as one of the Premier League’s – and England’s – most dependable and consistent midfielders this season, such a valuation may still draw strong interest.

Four transfers lined up

Manchester United are gearing up for another active summer window, with plans in place to make four key signings. The club want to bring in two midfielders, a left back and a left-sided attacker as part of the next phase of their rebuild.

Anderson remains their top midfield target, but Adam Wharton is also high on their shortlist, along with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, who had previously been pursued last summer. Newcastle duo Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are likewise under consideration.

At left back, Myles Lewis-Skelly has become a notable option. The England youngster has fallen out of Arsenal’s regular first-team setup this season and is viewed internally as a possible long-term replacement for Luke Shaw.

In attacking areas, United are looking to add a player who can offer both width and a scoring threat. RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande is one of the names being tracked, along with Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye.
