Leeds United have been linked with an intriguing move to sign Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn this summer.

The seven games remaining in the Premier League are going to have a huge bearing on what level of ambition Leeds can show in the transfer window.

Staying in the division should produce a busy and exciting window. One position surely up for scrutiny is the goalkeeper slot, after Lucas Perri lost his starting berth to Karl Darlow.

Leeds United reportedly interested in Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn

It won’t be a shock if Leeds are again scouring Europe for a goalkeeper that can improve the starting lineup in the top flight, should we stay up.

An intriguing link this week comes from The Leeds View. They claim that United are keeping tabs on Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn.

The 25-year-old is claimed by a source close to the player to be someone of interest to Leeds. It comes amidst a pending review of the goalkeeper position this summer.

Perri’s position as a starter is obviously incredibly weak, and there’s chance that interest be revived in the Brazilian this summer, after late approaches from Besiktas in January.

Meanwhile, Karl Darlow, Illan Meslier and Alex Cairns are out of contract this summer, meaning all four of United’s ‘keepers are subject to currently uncertain footing at the club.

Leeds United can forget uninspiring Sol Brynn links as 49ers need to find better than Lucas Perri

We are surely all in agreement that Leeds need to strengthen in goal this summer. Perri hasn’t been up to scratch so far in the league. And, we aren’t in a position where we can be completely patient for him to come good.

So, a link to a ‘keeper playing regularly for a Championship promotion-chaser makes sense. However, if Leeds are to dip into the EFL market, it has to be for someone who is a sure thing here and now.

Byrnn doesn’t look like a goalkeeper that will drastically improve Leeds between the sticks right now. The ‘Boro stopper is 17th out of 22 in the division for ‘goals prevented’, standing at -4.6 on that front.

The goals prevented stat calculates every ‘keeper’s expected goals on target sum (xGOT) – the quality of a shot once it’s taken – and subtracts their goals conceded. Essentially, if you’re on a negative number, you’re not saving what you’re expected to. For reference, Illan Meslier last season ended on -3.1.

If his shot-stopping is noticeably worse over a season than Meslier, who we ditched before promotion, then is Brynn the man to take us forward? No, probably not.

His ball-playing ability is something that’s attributed as a reason for Leeds’ interest. That is fair enough in Middlesbrough’s system under Kim Hellberg. But, as it was the case with Meslier, it’s not nearly enough to warrant a start in the Premier League.

If you’re looking to the Championship, it has to be plainly obvious that the player is too good for the league. I don’t think Brynn is a clear Premier League player in waiting. Not yet, anyway.
