Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has confirmed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin has missed training this week due to a minor hamstring issue.
United return to action this weekend with an FA Cup quarter-final tie against West Ham on Sunday. With that, Daniel Farke has a huge opportunity to enjoy some real success at Elland Road this season with a trip to Wembley up for grabs, alongside survival.
After the international break, Farke will have been hoping his key players returned to the squad intact after duty elsewhere.
Leeds United team news confirmed pre-West Ham: Dominic Calvert-Lewin fresh doubt with hamstring concern
After England duty in March, the worry was that Dominic Calvert-Lewin would pick up an issue during his time in Thomas Tuchel’s setup.
Ironically, though, Calvert-Lewin has since tweaked his hamstring during training at Thorp Arch this week.
Farke has confirmed that the striker cut his training session short yesterday with a minor issue, and sat out today as a precaution as well.
“Dominic ended yesterday’s training session earlier because he felt some hamstring problems. Same today, not involved so a question mark behind his availability,” Farke explained, per the YEP.
Immediately, you worry about the severity of this issue for someone with historic problems. However, Farke is optimistic that it’s a minor issue as he confirmed the club are putting him through a precautionary scan.
“Hopefully just a minor problem,” the Leeds boss continued.“Lots of travelling, different circumstances, sometimes it can happen. Yesterday in training he felt a little problem with his hamstring and didn’t want to risk anything. Today we decided to scan him as a precaution. I hope he’s back in team training tomorrow but we have to assess him. I hope he’s with us for Sunday.”
Leeds United cannot risk Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fitness for the FA Cup
If the squad was fully fit for this weekend, you’d have absolutely started Calvert-Lewin away to West Ham. He needs his confidence back up and a cup game could’ve been ideal.
That said, with this injury, I would not be risking him whatsoever. He’s not in a position where we can risk him at all with his fitness.
Lukas Nmecha has been a terrific understudy regarding his goal contribution this season, so I think it’s a no-brainer that he starts.
Elsewhere, I’d like to see some natural width from the side too.
