After struggling through 2026 so far without a win, Tottenham Hotspur have officially appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager.
This decision came only two days after Igor Tudor was sacked, a month into his role, having only been appointed until the end of the season.
Similarly to Michael Carrick at Manchester United, Tutor was hired to stabilise the club in the wake of Thomas Frank, however it didn’t go to plan.
Now in 17th place, Tottenham are dangerously close to relegation, and the chance of hiring free agent Roberto De Zerbi was seemingly too good to miss.
However, instead of coming in until the summer, De Zerbi has already signed a 5-year contract, keeping him at the London-based club until 2031.
That isn’t all though as La Gazzetta Dello Sport, as reported by SportsWitness has now reported that there is a clause to the contract giving him even more power at the club.
Over recent seasons, more and more teams have been appointing head coaches as opposed to managers, despite them being regularly referred to still as managers.
The real difference is the powers away from the on-field play. While head coaches are purely focused on game preparation, training and match-day tactics, managers have much more power.
Previously managers had influence in squad building and long-term planning, however in most cases now, the technical directors and sporting directors take the lead on those.
This isn’t to be the case at Spurs however, as the Italian publication has reported that Roberto De Zerbi is to have powers similar to the traditional manager role.
The report likens his powers at Tottenham Hotspur to Sir Alex Ferguson’s, one of the most iconic managers of the Premier League era.
It’s understood that De Zerbi rejected their offer initially, however it was these extra powers and agreement to let him have a bigger say at the club that won him round.
