The centre back was given his marching orders for hauling down Evanilson, with referee Stuart Attwell brandishing a straight red card for the challenge on the Brazilian, as he went in on goal.

That spot kick saw Bournemouth draw level at 2-2 as Junior Kroupi converted from the spot, but Maguire wasn’t happy to be dismissed.

He had words with the fourth official on his way down the tunnel, and for that he has now been charged.

A statement from an FA spokesperson said: “Harry Maguire has been charged after being sent off in the 78th minute of Manchester United FC’s Premier League match against AFC Bournemouth on Friday 20 March.

“It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal.

“Harry Maguire has until Thursday 2 April to provide a response.”
