Almost 18 months on from Marcus Rashford’s final Manchester United appearance, his ties to the club remain very much alive – at least on paper. The England international has put together an impressive campaign on loan at Barcelona, contributing 10 goals and 13 assists across 39 appearances in all competitions.

Having already lifted the Spanish Super Cup, the La Liga champions are on track to defend their title and have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Rashford has made no secret of his ambition to stay in Catalonia permanently, but whether United and Barca can reach an agreement over his uncertain future is an entirely different question.

Possible United return

The 28-year-old hasn’t pulled on a United shirt since December 2024, when he featured in their 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League. Having openly acknowledged his readiness for a fresh challenge while still at the club, it seemed highly unlikely that a return to Old Trafford would ever be on the cards.

However, with speculation mounting that Barcelona could seek to renegotiate the terms of his £26million buy option, United’s hierarchy are reportedly standing firm on their asking price and would even sanction Rashford’s return should the option not be triggered.

According to ESPN, Rashford would prefer to stay at Barcelona but hasn’t yet ruled out a surprise return to Manchester. A reintegration back into the first team remains an unlikely prospect, with the club targeting a left winger in the summer transfer window.

New transfer valuation

Despite reports of Barcelona looking to drive down the £26m purchase option, senior figures at United believe their academy product’s value has soared since his move abroad.

Thanks to his resurgence in form, particularly on the European stage, Mirror Football understands United officials place Rashford’s price tag closer to £50m, with a number of clubs expressing interest in securing his signature this summer.

Given the vast disparity in both clubs’ assessment of the winger’s worth, it remains to be seen whether an agreement on price can be reached, though the Catalan giants could hold the upper hand given Rashford has already expressed his desire to continue his career at the Camp Nou.

Alternative options

With Rashford’s future hanging in the balance, Spanish outlet Marca has reported that Barcelona’s sporting director Deco is weighing up potential alternatives to signing the Englishman on a permanent basis this summer.

Should Rashford fail to secure a permanent switch to the Catalan club at the end of the campaign, one player reportedly earmarked as his replacement is Benfica talent Andreas Schjelderup. The 21-year-old has netted seven goals this term and went so far as to publicly voice his excitement at being linked with the club.

Responding to the speculation, the left-winger told Norwegian TV channel TV2: “The truth is I didn’t know anything about this, but if it were true, it would be fantastic.” With Barcelona effectively receiving the green light from Schjelderup, they certainly face a significant decision. A seven-year age gap compared to Rashford could prove to be pivotal.
