Echoing the official Albion socials, Welbeck really is having a season to remember.
With a tally of 12 goals, it’s the highest number of Premier League goals he’s scored in a season.
Currently, he’s the Premier League’s top English goalscorer too.
At the ripe age of 35, he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Just one day after being snubbed from England’s latest squad list, he scored a brace against Liverpool (Saturday, March 21).
Welbeck’s efforts for Albion mean that he’s just the third player in Premier League history to score more than 10 goals in a season for the first time at the age of 35 or over.
He joins Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gary McAllister, who have previously achieved the feat.
Before that Liverpool fixture, Brighton’s head coach Fabian Hurzeler had told Welbeck to “control the controllables”.
It’s fair to say he delivered on that.
Following that game, the former England International told TNT Sports: “I like to focus on the positive side so for my name to be mentioned is nice. It’s a good thing.
“I like to focus on that part of the game. I can only control what I can control.
Welbeck added: “I don’t like to waste energy on something I have no bearing on.
“I enjoy my life and I am enjoying my football. The rest of the stuff sorts itself out.”
Welbeck last played for England on September 11th, 2018 against Switzerland.
England won the match 1–0 at the King Power Stadium, with Welbeck entering the game as a 61st-minute substitute, replacing Marcus Rashford.
Danny’s second-highest goal tally in England’s top flight was only last season, netting 10 for Albion.
The striker hit double figures for the first time in his Premier League career.
Looking down the list, he scored nine goals in both his 2011/12 and 2013/14 seasons with Manchester United.
During his time at Old Trafford, he won the Premier League, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup, and was named the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year (2008–09). He later played for Arsenal, winning the FA Cup.
But after he joined Watford in 2019 on a free transfer from The Gunners, you’d be hard-pressed to believe he’d be scoring as many as he is seven years later.
During that season-long spell at The Hornets, he made just 18 appearances, scoring two.
These stats don’t mention that he suffered a hamstring injury early in October of that year. He was out for four months.
Joining Brighton in 2020, it seemed like Welbeck’s last chance to prove his quality in the Premier League.
He netted six goals in each of his three seasons for Albion. The 2023/24 season saw five goals.
But what’s most striking is his longevity and his ability to stay fit. With Danny enjoying his highest goal tally in a Premier League season with seven fixtures to go, he’ll be looking to round off a very successful campaign.
However, what would take it further is a call-up from Thomas Tuchel the England manager .
As a striker who burst onto the scene with Manchester United in 2008, his experience could be crucial for England.
