Leicester City season-ticket holders must renew their seat before knowing which division the club will compete in next term.
City season tickets for the 2026-27 campaign went on sale on Tuesday, with the club now announcing that the deadline for supporters to secure their seat is 5pm on Monday, April 20.
There will be three games left to play in the Championship on that date, and so City’s fate is very unlikely to be mathematically determined at that stage, as they would either need to be 10 points clear of the drop zone, or 10 points shy of safety.
When City announced their price freeze last week, no renewal deadline was mentioned, the club only confirming that supporters on the direct debit automatic renewal scheme would have until April 29 to opt out or make changes, with that date also before the season concludes.
Fan group Foxes Trust released a statement in response, saying they had contacted the club to request that the direct debit deadline be pushed back to the following week so that fans would have certainty over which division the club were playing in.
It’s understood that the club have set April 29 as it’s the latest date they can set in order to get direct debits in place for June 1, when the first monthly payment will be taken.
City fans also had to decide on season ticket renewals before their fate was known last season, albeit they were 15 points adrift of safety with seven games to go, and so were very likely to be heading to the Championship at that stage.
The last time City were in the Championship, the season-ticket renewal deadline was not until May 13, after the regular campaign had concluded, and so supporters knew that the club had been promoted.
Three seasons ago, when City were relegated out of the Premier League, the renewal deadline was not until June 14, well after the campaign had concluded.
Early season-ticket deadlines have already caused controversy around the country, with a backlash at Plymouth leading to an apology from the Pilgrims and a change of date.
The club originally set their renewal deadline for April 24 – later than City’s deadline – but it led to fan frustration, as the club are in the League One play-off race and so do not know which division they will be in next season.
The club apologised and then changed the deadline until May 3, after the regular season has concluded. Albeit, if Plymouth do make the play-offs, fans will have to decide if they want to renew their season tickets before the outcome is known.
With the price freeze at City, fans could be paying the same fee in League One as they did in the Premier League two seasons ago. But at £404 for the cheapest renewal seat, it would only be the sixth most expensive in the third tier.
On Tuesday, City chief executive Kevin Davies said: “Season-ticket holders are a huge part of this football club, and we know the commitment that comes with following us over a season.
“That was part of the thinking behind freezing prices again in our general admission areas for 2026/27.
“We want to keep attending King Power Stadium as affordable as we can for our supporters. We’re grateful for their continued backing and look forward to having them with us again for the season ahead.”
