General manager Chris Minns said: “I’m very proud that we are recognised for amazing food and great service and it means so much to me and the team that our family owned business is loved by locals and those further afield.

“With so many great places to choose from in Southampton combined with the current economic climate we want to make sure every pound spent with us feels like good value.”

Head chef Dean Knibbs, who previously featured in the Daily Echo’s meet the chef column, added: “Since we opened we have always tried to deliver a great dining experience and our dishes are carefully put together with local ingredients – so this is a great accolade achieved because our customers have taken the time to leave us some kind words.

“Where else can you eat whilst sitting next to a waterfall or a big engine in a 300 year old mill?”

The mill was part of the Manor of Botley and owned by Ralph de Mortimer, a nobleman who fought on the side of King William I at the Battle of Hastings.

Under the ownership of the Dukes of Portland, it was expanded in 1757 and the building containing the restaurant was constructed.

The Botley Flour Milling Company was formed in the 1920s with Fred Appleby buying into the company in 1923. Botley Mills has remained in his family until the present day, with milling taking place up until 1993.

The building has been sympathetically renovated to create a unique dining experience.
