He was one of five goalkeepers named by Tuchel for games against Uruguay and Japan, alongside Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, Aaron Ramsdale and James Trafford.

When asked whether Steele would be going to the finals as an unregistered player, Tuchel responded by saying: “No one is on the plane to America.

“He is now with us in the March camp.

“England has a history of taking four goalkeepers to the tournament, which makes absolute sense.

“We identified Jason to be a very, very good candidate for this role.

“We wanted to try it and the trial is now in the March camp.”

But the 35-year-old also offers more than his reflexes. From dealing with depression, which began in his mid-20s, he can offer support.

Speaking about the importance of mental health with Sky Sports last year, Steele said: “Growing up as young athletes, especially young male athletes.

“We’re generally taught to get up, be brave, keep going, push on.

“I think it’s important to know there’s times where it’s okay not to feel okay.

“It’s okay to seek somebody to talk to, a bit of advice, a bit of help.

“That’s something I feel  really strongly about.”

Another topic Jason touched on was the impact of players and social media, with a focus on goalkeepers.

Steele added: “(But) goalkeepers in modern football are making different decisions because of social media and the pressure that comes across.

“Maybe subconsciously. And even pundits, even the way pundits talk.

“And then you might not think you’re doing that, but subconsciously it does affect things.

“ I think a lot of it’s uneducated criticism. This is my honest opinion.”

England will be looking to put its woes to bed against Japan.

The fixture follows a disappointing 1-1 draw against Uruguay on Friday, March 27th.

They face Japan on Tuesday, March 31st, with kick-off at 7.45 pm.
