Sunderland stewards were forced into action at the Stadium of Light during the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 clash.
A crowd of over 10,000 were in attendance on Wearside with 1,500 travelling fans from Newcastle turning out for the Wear-Tyne derby. As the second half started around 100 or so Sunderland fans made their way into the away section and began edging closer to the strong following from Newcastle.
With the men’s Tyne-Wear clash still fresh in the memory for both sets of fans, the second half of the crucial WSL2, which Newcastle need to win to stay in the promotion race, was interupted as Sunderland fans began taunting the Toon Army.
A chant of: “1-0 down, 2-1 up, Brian Brobbey wrapped it up” could be heard across the Stadium of Light as home fans attempted to occupy the away section. However, stewards were quickly alerted and ushered the home fans back into the appropriate area.

Before the game Newcastle coach Tanya Oxtoby had told her players to embrace the derby clash and said: “I think you’ve got to embrace big games because that’s the reason we play football. So there’s an element of enjoying and embracing the occasion, but it’s also about getting the balance to ensure we control our performance.
“If you go playing the occasion, then you can come unstuck. So we need to make sure we don’t move away from all the things we’ve been doing to get us to this position and focus on all of the small details and executing them.”
