He will officially depart the Black Cats – the club he helped lead to the Premier League – this summer, and according to reporter Alan Nixon, two clubs lead the chase for him.

The first is Town, where he’s mostly impressed in the engine room alongside Azor Matusiwa, since arriving in Suffolk.

And league leaders Coventry City are the other side interested in signing him, in what would be a free transfer.

Speaking recently, Neil enthused about Town’s chances of reaching the Premier League and praised his new team-mates.

He said: “Here we’ve got an unbelievable chance to sneak into the top two.

“I think it’s the same cliché. Every game, we need to focus, make sure that we’re fully prepared for it and try and take the three points from each from now until the end of the season.”

Neil added: “We’ve got a great group of lads who will run forever, so we just need to stick together for the rest of the season and, like I said, keep trying to get them three points each week.”
