Leicester City could be charging Premier League prices for League One football next season after announcing a freeze on season-ticket fees.

It’s the 10th time in 12 seasons that City have chosen not to raise their season-ticket prices, but the figure will remain the same no matter the division the club are in.

City fans can renew their seats from Tuesday, March 31, before knowing which division the club will be in, with their Championship future to be decided over the final seven matches of the campaign.

But if City go down, the prices will not change. Fans will pay the same figure for the same number of games whether their club are in the second or third tier.

England and Nike have launched the new home, away and goalkeeper kits to be worn at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

With these prices the same as when City were in the Premier League last term, fans could be charged Premier League fees for League One football.

However, with City’s cheapest season ticket at £404, it would not be the most expensive in the division.

Looking at season-ticket prices for the current 24 League One clubs – either based on the upcoming campaign or this term if details for 26-27 have not yet been released – City’s would rank as the sixth-most expensive.

The cheapest season ticket at Stockport County for this season was £463, which is the most expensive in the division. The cheapest season tickets at Luton, Plymouth, Rotherham and Wimbledon come in at more than City’s £404.

But City’s season-ticket price still comes in above the average for League One, which stands at £355. Doncaster are offering the cheapest adult season ticket at £244.

Back-to-back relegations may put fans off no matter the price of the season ticket. For the current campaign, season-ticket renewals stood at just below 90 per cent, an impressive figure given how poor last season was, but still the lowest in the four years for which the club has published the data.

Recent attendances suggest the renewal rate may be lower if the club drop into League One, and perhaps even if they stay in the Championship.

Attendances have been falling slightly through the season, with the crowd regularly under 30,000 of late, having remained above that for more than a decade.

But even those figures have perhaps been misleading, as they are tickets sold rather than fans through the turnstiles. Many season-ticket holders have not been choosing to take up their seats.

The last time City were in League One, the average attendance was 20,253. It seems low, but it was only a fall of 3,000 from the previous year in the Championship.
