Nottingham Forest will be watching closely as former midfielder Danilo enjoys a strong run of form back in Brazil, ahead of the national team’s latest call-up.
The 24-year-old, who previously featured for Forest in the Premier League, is now shining at Botafogo. His performances have pushed him back into the Brazil squad at a key moment, just before the final World Cup list is decided.
There is a clear sense that Danilo has taken a step forward since his time in England. And he is not hiding it.
Speaking this week to the Brazilian FA official channels, the midfielder reflected on his journey and made direct reference to his spell at Forest as part of his development.
“I was younger at Palmeiras and still building my name. Now I’m more experienced. I went abroad, played for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, and came back to Botafogo. I’m in a great moment. I think I’m more prepared now than when I was first called up.”
That quote alone will resonate with Forest fans. It shows that his time in England played a real role in shaping the player he is today.
Strong numbers underline current form
Danilo’s performances this season have backed up his words.
He has scored five goals in the Brazilian league and is currently the second top scorer in the competition. That return is unusual for a central midfielder and highlights how much his game has evolved.
In addition, he has one assist and has featured in six league matches so far, playing consistent minutes. As a result, he has become one of Botafogo’s standout players in 2026.
Importantly, this form comes at the right time. Brazil are preparing for friendlies against France and Croatia, which will serve as the final tests before the World Cup squad is confirmed.
Danilo is fully aware of the stakes.
“These are big teams that always go far in the World Cup. It will be a great experience and will help us arrive more prepared,” he said.
Nottingham Forest spell seen as key step
There is a noticeable shift in how Danilo speaks about his career now. He no longer frames his time abroad as a short episode. Instead, he treats it as a crucial stage that added maturity and tactical understanding.
That will be encouraging for Nottingham Forest supporters. Even after returning to Brazil, the club remains part of his development story.
As we covered earlier, there is also an interesting backdrop involving Botafogo and Marinakis. Reports in Brazil claim John Textor was blocked from selling Danilo back to Nottingham Forest, for around €19m.
The club let go of a player with clear upside, and given their current situation fighting relegation, he could arguably have been useful now.
At just 24, Danilo still has years ahead of him. Given his current form and growing influence, it would not be surprising if European clubs start monitoring him again.
For now, though, the focus is clear. He wants to secure his place in Brazil’s World Cup squad. And this time, as he puts it himself, he feels ready.
