Newcastle United are ready to offer Lewis Miley a new improved contract at St James’ Park as they look to ensure they hold on to their Academy star boy.
The 19-year-old is currently injured with a thigh issue but could return for the next Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on April 12. Miley last signed a new deal in early 2024, but as Chronicle Live reported in Notebook on January 24, there was a date in the diary to speak about a renewal.
The pace of those discussions behind the scenes has accelerated in recent weeks, with Newcastle eager to ensure another young Geordie ace does not leave the club in the same manner as Elliot Anderson. It is believed that Miley’s current deal runs until 2029, but a new enhanced offer will keep him on Tyneside with his best years in front of him.
Miley is admired by Arsenal who see him as a future England star too, but Newcastle are well protected with his contractual status and it would take a king’s ransom for the PSR-threatened Gunners to steal in.
A new deal would bring him closer to some of the club’s top earners such as Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Nick Woltemade. Another big reason for looking after Miley, who could become the club’s highest-paid teen in club history, is the fact that he can operate in midfield, at centre-back and right-back.

Speaking recently on the youngster from Stanley, United head coach Eddie Howe said: “Lewis is an incredible player, an incredible talent.
“We knew he could play in different positions, but this year it has really come to the fore.
“He’s done so well at right-back. Sometimes he has played at centre-half, he has taken every single position in his stride.
“He’s adding qualities all the time to his game, adding new things, but I think deep down you’ve got a really, really good technical footballer who’s a great athlete.
“He’s also a great person and a great character, so I think you put all those qualities together, I think you’ve got a great player.”
Speaking about his rapport with stars like Bruno and Tonali, Miley said recently: “That’s massive. Having all these top players like Bruno around me, it just improves me every day, and it’s the best for how we can perform and play with each other.
“It’s a great feeling. Obviously, the manager trusts me a lot, which is great. Hopefully, I can keep doing that so he keeps playing me really. I’ll just keep focusing on myself and keep performing well.”
Miley was also enjoying the different positional roles thrown his way by Howe before the thigh injury suffered away to Paris St-Germain during the 1-1 draw.
He said: “The gaffer just told me to go and enjoy it. It’s a different position to learn different things and I coped with that quite well. It can only be good for me really to learn different positions.”
Germany make Nick Woltemade point in dramatic 4-3 win

Julian Nagelsmann lived up to his promise of bringing back Nick Woltemade as an attacker, albeit he had to be satisfied with a substitute role in Germany’s 4-3 win in Switzerland.
Naglesman stated after the game he was looking to restore Woltemade’s confidence. He said: “Nick (Woltemade) has a great record with us, but he’s not having an easy time at Newcastle right now.
“Now I have the choice between boosting the confidence of a top striker who’s in good form or dropping a top striker who’s not quite in good form right now.”
Woltemade’s name crept into the Press conference after the seven-goal thriller after Woltemade got time ahead of Deniz Undav. Naglesman explained: “I say it’s advisable for Nick Woltemade to get back on track with us, because things aren’t going 100 percent smoothly at Newcastle. And Deniz is on a roll anyway; whether he plays today or not, it won’t change his confidence for this week.”
Newcastle United suffer TV snub
The Magpies will not feature heavily in the broadcast schedule in May as it stands. United’s game at home to Brighton & Hove Albion stays at 3pm on May 2.
And while the game against Nottingham Forest (a) on May 9 and West Ham on May 17 could be moved depending on the respective progress of the Trees in Europe and the Hammers in the FA Cup, it feels like TV bosses see Newcastle’s end to the season as a flat affair as they sit in the bottom half of the table, safe from the drop and potentially out of the race for Europe.
