Newcastle United have updated their supporters on what happens next with the club crest

Newcastle United supremo David Hopkinson has confirmed there is no rush to push out a new club crest – after plans for a redesigned club badge were halted.

The sensible move to pause proceedings on the crest front coincides with the exit of digital chief Dan Ginger, who left St James’ Park earlier this month. Ginger had held a presentation in front of journalists at the club’s media centre last spring, insisting the current badge was out of date.

Both Ginger and former commercial chief Peter Silverstone had worked on changing the crest but the duo’s exit has resulted in a slight rethink. Hopkinson has been told it would be an easy to win to either leave it alone or make slight tweaks to the current edition of the crest.

Either way, the current badge will be on next season’s shirts with the latest fan meeting notes reading: “David Hopkinson noted that the current crest contains design inconsistencies, including asymmetry. When asked about timescales, DH confirmed there is no urgency, stressing the importance of getting the process right.

“Any proposed changes to the crest will not appear on next season’s shirt, as the design window has passed, and is instead expected to feature from the 2027/28 season.

“Rajat Nayyar (vice fan chair) expressed relief that the process will not be rushed, noting that the previous approach felt time-pressured. DH confirmed he will update the Board and inform them that the matter has been discussed with the Fan Advisory Board.”

United announced plans on May 9 last year when the Magpies stated changes were necessary in order to “keep pace” with the modern world. However, the news was not met with universal approval, while some fans feared an unpopular revamp to the much-loved crest that has adorned Newcastle jerseys and club walls since 1988.

The club are understood to have enjoyed another big payday recently with the old crest with the current Adidas tracksuits and merchandise selling like hot cakes.
