The 30-year-old, who is spending the rest of the season on loan at Championship rivals Derby County, was brought on in the second half of extra time. However, within minutes, he was clattered by Stepan Chaloupek , who had eyes on the man rather than the ball, knocking Szmodics unconscious.
This sums up Glenn Nyberg’s refereeing performance tonight. Clear, intentional & nasty foul on Szmodics leaving him unconscious on the floor. Referee had to consult with the 4th official before awarding the free & issued no card. 🙄 Woeful stuff! #CZEIRL #COYBIG pic.twitter.com/J6dtztzG6y

He was treated on the pitch before given oxygen and stretchered off the pitch. Ireland were subsequently beaten on penalties after a 2-2 draw, ending their dreams of qualifying for this summer’s tournament.
Szmodics remained unconscious for a while – reportedly around an hour – after arriving at the hospital in Prague, where he spent the night. Manager Heimir Hallgrímsson revealed that he regained consciousness during his post-match press conference.
“Sammie was unconscious on the ground, but we have good doctors and they took care of him on the grass,” Hallgrímsson said. “He’s now at hospital and back to consciousness.
“He’s just being tested and checked and monitored and he will stay here tonight and hopefully fly back to Ireland tomorrow.”
A statement from the FAI added: “Following further tests and a period of observation, he has been safely discharged from hospital – and will continue his recovery under the care of the Republic of Ireland and Derby County medical teams.”
Szmodics, who was released from hospital this morning, also shared an update via X.
